Piece of Belgian carp history from 1940 unearthed
Unlike in the UK where every snippet of carp history is recorded, thanks to people like Tim Paisley, Kevin Clifford and the late Chris Ball, it's different over here in Europe. In our magazine we spent some features on German and Swedish history, in Belgium the VBK documented a lot, we believe the KSN organisation did a few bits on the Netherlands and there's also a few French fishing journalists we speak to regularly. But all in all there's no general books or anything per country or dealing with European carp history, which is very rich as well and goes back at least 100 years.
To my amazement my dad - who is a collector of all sorts of vintage old ducuments, beer labels, etc - came up with this snippet from a 1940's Belgian newspaper. Two carp, a ten pounder and a low double figure carp, had been caught on the Zuid-Willemsvaart in Bocholt. The biggest of the two seemingly a fully carp. Never ever seen this bit of history before and I am sure none of you did either.
One to keep in my collection.
